Phetxoumphone quarterfinal win highlights Day 2 of State Wrestling

Athletes from Webster City, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows and Eagle Grove descended upon Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines for Day 2 of the Iowa State High School Wrestling Championships.

The day was highlighted by CGD junior Linden Phetxoumphone qualifying for the semifinals at 120 pounds for the 3rd consecutive year, as Phetxoumphone won a 19-3 tech fall over Winterset’s Judah Gurwell in the quarterfinals. Phetxoumphone’s opponent in the semifinals will be Ballard’s Easton Enyeart, who won 4-1 decision over Burlington Notre Dame’s Colt Davis to advance.

CGD’s 3 other quaterfinalists would lose their matches by a combined total of 6 points, as Adrian Phetxoumphone lost a 4-3 decision to Davis County senior Emmitt Newton at 126. Colin Sesker would lose a 6-2 decision to Central Lyon/George-Little Rock’s Ragen Hasche at 144, while Charlie Campbell lost a 9-8 decision to Mediapolis’s Kyler Crow at 175.

The Cowboys would see some tough performances in consolations, as Ryland Morgan advanced to the blood round by beating Algona’s Carter McGregor in a 12-9 decision, as JT Kelso pinned Knoxville’s Regan Roberts to advance to the blood round at 285.

Eagle Grove would see one athlete stay alive for the blood round, as junior Hayden Schafer won both consolation matches on Thursday, as he defeated CGD’s Caleb Seaba in a 4-1 sudden victory decision. Jayden Kreitlow saw his season end at 175 in the 3rd round of consolations, while Jesus Baez saw his season end in the 2nd round of consolations at 285.

Webster City would see its season come to an end, as senior Luke Estlund lost in the consolation first round to Sheldon/South O’Brien’s Mitchel Fisher by pin at 165. Cody Elliott would also lose in the consolation first round in an 11-4 decision to AP-GC’s Jesse Brouwer at 215.
