4 Cowboy wrestlers into quarterfinals on Day 1 of State Tournament

Webster City Lynx, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys and Eagle Grove Eagles wrestlers ascended upon Wells Fargo Arena on Wednesday evening for Day 1 of the 100th Annual Iowa High School State Wrestling Championships in Des Moines.

On day 1, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows would send 4 wrestlers onto Thursday’s quarterfinals, the first being Linden Phetxoumphone at 120. Phetxoumphone would struggle at times in the match against Assumption’s Gabe Schnerre, but would come away with 7-3 decision and will face Winterset’s Judah Gurwell in the quarters. Adrian Phetxoumphone would not have problems in his first match at 126, as he would win a 17-2 tech fall over Gavin Knutson of Decorah to advance and face Davis County’s Emmitt Newton in the quarterfinals. Colin Sesker would be the Cowboys 3rd quarterfinalist, winning his first round match with Hampton-Dumont-CAL’s Jaymes Stevens by 10-2 major decision, before taking down Algona’s Barrett Morgan in an NCC title rematch in the 2nd round by a 4-0 decision, as Sesker will face Central Lyon/George-Little Rock’s Ragen Hasche in the quarterfinals. Charlie Campbell would punch his ticket to the quarterfinals at 175 with a 5-3 decision over Ayden Antonelli, as Campbell will face Mediapolis’s Kyler Crow in the quarters.

Other wrestlers for the Cowboys saw Paxton Redenius lose by fall in the first round to Brennan Jacobs of Greene County in the 1st round at 106, while Angel Cortes won by tech fall over OABCIG’s Watson Susie in the first round at 113, before losing a 10-2 decision to 3rd-seeded Quinn Arellano of Van Meter in the 2nd round. Caleb Seaba won by tech fall in his first match over Chayton Snethen of Harlan, before losing by tech fall to Greene County’s Brent Dennhardt. Ryland Morgan would lose by major decision in the first round of 165 to Mitchel Fisher of Sheldon/South O’Brien and JT Kelso bowed out in the 2nd round in an 8-0 major decision to Atlantic’s Evan Sorenson.

Webster City saw Luke Estlund bow out in the first round against Mount Vernon’s Cooper Hird as Estlund dropped a 14-0 major decision. The other Lynx qualifier in Cody Elliott would lose by pinfall in the first round to Ballard’s Jackson Wacha.

Eagle Grove would see Hayden Schafer advance past the first round with a 17-2 tech fall over Peyton Johnson of Mediapolis at 157, but Schafer would lose a 10-4 decision to top-seeded Lucas Kral of Garner-Hayfield-Ventura. Jayden Kreitlow would lose a 4-3 decision to Grinnell’s Josh Ringler at 175 in the first round, while Jesus Baez also fell in the first round to West Delaware’s Owen Pettlon by a 1-0 decision.
