
The Eagle Grove Eagles wrestling team returned to action on Friday morning, as they made drive west on Highway 3 to compete at their Class 2A, District 7 Tournament at Humboldt High School in Humboldt. The Eagles were joined by the host Wildcats, as well as Gilbert, Greene County, North Polk, Perry, Southeast Valley and West Marshall.
Eagle Grove would qualify 3 for the state tournament on Friday, as the meet was moved up to accommodate for the snowy weather. The first qualifier was Jesus Baez at 285 pounds, as Baez defeated Perry’s Narciso Hidalgo with a sudden victory takedown to win 4-1 and claim the district title at 285. Hayden Schafer would follow with 2nd place finish, after losing in the championship, he would beat Humboldt’s Braden Downs 8-1 to punch his ticket. Finally, Jayden Kreitlow won his 2nd place match at 175 after dropping his title match, as Kreitlow won a 17-8 major decision over North Polk’s Mason Ackerman to punch his ticket to state.
Hunter Waldo-Martinez would place 3rd at 126, winning a 12-8 decision over Humboldt’s Jonny Hayden, but a semifinal loss to Andrew Reed of North Polk prevented a 2nd place match. Fourth-Place finishers for the Eagles included Dylan Terwilliger (120), Jackson Babcock (132), Carter Bjorklund (165) and Reece Demuth (190).
Eagle Grove would finish 5th with 109 points, as Humboldt claimed the team title with 191 points.
