Cowboys send 9, Estlund injury comeback highlights 2A-11 Tournament on Saturday

The Webster City Lynx, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys and Roland-Story Norsemen wrestling teams returned to action on Saturday as they competed in their Class 2A, District 11 Tournament at Webster City High School. The Lynx, Cowboys and Norsemen were joined by BCLUW-SH, Dike-New Hartford, East Marshall/GMG, Union Community and Woodward-Granger.

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows would put together a banner day, qualifying a school-record 9 athletes t0 Wednesday’s State Tournament, including 6 district champions. Adrian Phetxoumphone would claim the first district title at 126 with a 7-4 decision over Union’s Kaydin Jones, as Colin Sesker claimed the district title at 144 with a 9-2 decision over Woodward-Granger’s Kinnick Grimm. The Cowboys would then reel off 3 straight titles, as Caleb Seaba would win the district title at 157 with a pin over Beau Towne of BCLUW-SH, Ryland Morgan pinned Webster City’s Luke Estlund for the 165 title and Charlie Campbell would tech fall Woodward-Granger’s Max Dalton for the 175 title. JT Kelso would put the stamp on things with a district title at 285 with a pin of Roland-Story’s Jake Rogers. The Cowboys would get 3 runners-up to qualify with Paxton Redenius (106), Angel Cortes (113) and Linden Phetxoumphone (120).

Webster City would get 2 qualifiers into the state tournament, the first at 165 with senior Luke Estlund. Estlund would fall in the district title match to Ryland Morgan of CGD, but Estlund would finish the day 2-1 and qualified for the state tournament, just 4 months after a significant knee injury ended his senior football season. The other qualifier for the Lynx would be junior Cody Elliott at 215, who lost the title match by fall to Woodward-Granger’s Kane Mahler-Moreno, but qualified as Lew Textor won the 3rd place match with Elliott holding a win over Textor earlier in the tournament.

Roland-Story would not send anyone to the state tournament, but did come away with a handful of 3rd and 4th place finishes. Konnor Blume would place 3rd at 106, as Cy Wilson placed 3rd at 120. Caiden Latch would be 3rd in a loaded 132-pound weight class, as Jake Rogers placed 3rd at 285. Fourth-place finishers for the Norsemen included Isaac Hall (150), Chance Georgius (190) and Wes Hansen (215).

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows claimed the district title with 213.5 points, while Webster City was 4th with 114.5 points. Roland-Story placed 6th with 92 points.
