Roland-Story basketball sweeps non-con doubleheader with Van Meter

The Roland-Story Norsemen basketball teams returned to action on Monday night, as they hosted the Van Meter Bulldogs in non-conference action at Roland-Story High School in Story City. Roland-Story’s girls entered at 18-2 and #7 in Class 3A, while Roland-Story’s boys entered at 6-13.

Roland-Story’s girls would get off to a sluggish start, as they were tied with the Bulldogs at 7-7 after the first quarter, before grabbing the lead by halftime by a score of 24-20. The 3rd quarter would be an even and physical battle, but by the 4th quarter, the Norsemen imposed their will on the Bulldogs to come away with a 52-41 win.

The KQWC Players of the Game were senior Claire Truesdell and sophomore Emma Truesdell, who each had 11 points, a team-high for the Norsemen. Finley Netten led Van Meter with 11 points.

Roland-Story’s boys followed as after trailing to Van Meter 17-10 after the first quarter, the Norsemen put together a dominant 2nd quarter to take a 27-21 halftime lead. Roland-Story managed to stay a step ahead of the Bulldogs in the second half, leading by as much as 10. However, Van Meter mounted a furious rally and a putback by freshman Garrison Thummel as time expired sent the game to overtime at 56-56. The Norsemen would flip the script right back in overtime, starting the period on a 10-0 run to help secure a 72-64 overtime win.

The KQWC Player of the Game was Roland-Story sophomore Luke Thoreson, who had a game-high 23 points, while Cody Long and Eli Van Hove each had 12 points. Garrison Thummel led Van Meter with 18 points.

Roland-Story basketball returns to action on Tuesday night, when they host Saydel in their conference and regular season finale at Roland-Story High School at 6 PM.
