Fort Dodge authorities involved in Tuesday night standoff with a suicidal male.

Fort Dodge Police on Tuesday night responded to a report of a suicidal male threatening to harm himself inside his room at the Baymont Inn and Suites. The information provided to authorities that the male had access to weapons and was suffering from a mental health conditon. As officers arrived on the scene, they were advised by dispatch that the male had called in stating that he had a firearm and was going to kill everyone. Law enforcement began securing the area as well as identifying which hotel rooms were occupied to ensure that all occupants of the hotel were safe. Officers then made contact with the male by phone in an effort to negotiate a safe resolution to the incident. Officers on the scene continued to communicate with the male for approximately four hours pleading with the male to peacefully surrender. Throughout the incident  the male exited his room multiple times while brandishing a handgun towards officers asking them to shoot him. During one of the interactions, a less lethal option was employed but was ultimately rendered infective and the male retreated to his room. During the course of the lengthy negotiations, it is believed that the male ingested an unknown amount of medications and eventually became unresponsive. Law enforcement on the scene made entry to the room and began life saving measures. The Fort Dodge Fire Department quickly responded and began administering advanced medical care. He was then transported to Unity Point Trinity Regional Medical Center by ambulance. The condition of the male and his identification is not being released. There were minor injuries to the male. No members of law enforcement,  hotel patrons or staff were injured during the incident. A firearm was recovered at the scene.  Fort Dodge Polic was assisted on the scene by the Webster County Sheriff’s Office, Webster County Attorney’s Office, Fort Dodge Fire Department and the Special Emergency Response Team.
