Webster City basketball splits road NCC doubleheader with Algona

The Webster City Lynx basketball teams returned to action on Friday night, as they made the trip north into Kossuth County to take on the Algona Bulldogs in North Central Conference action at Algona High School. Webster City’s girls entered at 3-13, while Webster City’s boys entered at 5-10.

Webster City would come out and give the 8th-ranked team in 3A their best shot, trailing just 15-12 after the first quarter and 30-25 at halftime. The Bulldogs kept the lead in the 3rd with a 46-41 advantage, but the Lynx would tie things up early on in the 4th quarter at 46-46. From there, Algona would lean on their veteran leadership to come away with a 61-53 win.

Olivia Gallentine led Webster City with a game-high 20 points, while Algona was led by Mya Lentz and Hayden McLaughlin with 15 points each.

The boys followed as Webster City continued their hot play with a simmering 21-point 1st quarter to lead 21-15 after the first. However, the tide turned drastically in the 2nd as Algona outscored the Lynx 18-2 to take a 33-23 halftime lead. Webster City began to battle back in the 3rd, trailing just 44-39, but Algona would build their lead to 13 midway through the 4th quarter. From there, Webster City mounted a furious rally, and with just over a minute left, Cole Miller’s corner 3 put the Lynx ahead for good in a 56-54 win.

Miller would have a career-night, finishing with 24 points off of 8 three-pointers, while Gavin Griffith had 14 points and 8 rebounds. Ben Helmers led Algona with 28 points.

Webster City basketball returns to action on Tuesday night, when they travel to Clear Lake to take on the Lions in North Central Conference action at Clear Lake High School.
