Jewell City Council reviews its 2025-26 budget and consider a request from Ames Regional Economic Alliance.

The Jewell City Council this week reviewed its city budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year. Jewell Public Works director Terry Anderson presented information to the council on future projects. They include dredge work to the lagoons, looping the water main on East Lane, replacing a water main between Second and  Third Streets and various street repairs throughout Jewell. The projects and possible funding sources will be discussed further at the upcoming budget workshop. The council met with the Jewell Park Committee on a recommendation for a private fence and concrete work at this time.. There are plans to stream city council meetings online. The City of Jewell plans to work on implementing the request after the office is restructured.

Montgomery Memorial Library director Roxie Young presented a recap of the 2024-25 fiscal year to the council. The library now offers mobile hot spots and streaming services that patrons may check out. 575 people participated in the summer passive programs. The library board is requesting the city of Jewell to contribute $78,000 for the fiscal year 2025-26. The request will be considered during budget discussions.

Ottie Maxey of the Ames Regional Economic Alliance introduced himself and explained how they are establishing a Hamilton County Growth Partnership and looking for a representative from the Jewell city council to attend meetings. It is a  $1000 commitment for the City to enter into a partnership. The council will discuss further at the February 10th council meeting
