South Hamilton basketball splits HOIAC doubleheader at Greene County

The South Hamilton Hawks basketball teams returned to action on Friday night, as they made the trip west to take on the Greene County Rams in Heart of Iowa Conference action at Greene County High School in Jefferson. South Hamilton’s girls entered at 3-7, while South Hamilton’s boys entered at 0-10.

South Hamilton’s girls would get off to a fast start against the short-handed Rams, leading 11-1 after the first and 26-8 at halftime. The Hawks kept their foot on the gas in the 2nd half for a 53-20 win.

Tessa Skartvedt would have a big night, scoring a game-high 21 points and collecting 11 rebounds, as Kaylen Trask added 8 points. Makenna Ebersole had 7 points to lead Greene County.

The boys game followed as South Hamilton was still in search for their first win of the season and had their best opportunity against the Rams. Greene County took a 17-12 lead after 1, and ballooned it to 41-25 at halftime. The Rams then pushed the lead to 52-34 after 3, before South Hamilton stormed back to try and steal the game, but the Rams would hold on for a 65-55 win.

Grant Larson had a game-high 27 points with 4 assists, while Jose Babcock had 12 points. Camden Jacobs led Greene County with 12 points, while Broc Stream and Isaac Carman had 11 points each.

South Hamilton basketball returns to action on Monday, when they travel to Gowrie to take on Southeast Valley in non-conference action at 7:30 PM.
