Eagle Grove wrestling places 7th at Gary Christensen Invite in Winterset

The Eagle Grove Eagles wrestling team returned to action on Saturday morning, as they made the drive into Madison County to compete in the annual Gary Christensen Invitational at Winterset High School. The Eagles were joined by ADM, Bishop Heelan, Carlisle, Clarke, Clarinda, East Union, Martensdale-St. Mays Osage, Pella, Saydel, Van Meter, Waukee and Woodward-Granger.

Eagle Grove would come away with a meet champion on Saturday as Hayden Schafer won the 157 lbs title. Schafer won by tech fall over Carlisle’s Larry Scott in the 1st round, before pinning Saydel’s Shane Scott in the quarterfinal, winning by major decision over Osage’s Ty Voigt in the semifinals, and pinning Woodward-Granger’s Will Atkinson in the final.

Hunter Waldo-Martinez would come away with a silver medal at 126 lbs on Saturday, pinning Carlisle’s Connor Sutton in the first round, then pinning Bishop Heelan’s Jayden Nguyen in the quarterfinals. Waldo-Martinez would win by major decision over Pella’s Brayden Sundby, before losing by fall to Osage’s Jasper Sonberg in the title match.

Dylan Terwilliger would place 3rd at 120, winning his 3rd place match over Saydel’s Roman Kile by major decision. Andrew Orozco placed 4th at 113, Jesus Baez was 6th at 285, Jayden Kreitlow was 7th at 175 and Cooper Thacker was 8th at 132.

Eagle Grove would place 7th in the tournament with 115 points, the Eagles return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Saint Ansgar to take on the Saints, Newman Catholic and North Butler/Clarksville in a non-conference quad dual at 6 PM.
