South Hamilton basketball splits home HOIAC doubleheader with Grand View Christian

The South Hamilton Hawks basketball team returned to action on Friday evening, as they hosted the Thunder of Grand View Christian in Heart of Iowa Conference action at South Hamilton High School in Jewell. The Hawk girls entered at 1-3, while the Hawk boys entered at 0-4 coming into their first-ever conference matchup with the Thunder.

It was Grand View Christian that got off to the fast start in the girls game, leading 10-4 after the first quarter. However, South Hamilton cut into the deficit by halftime, trailing just 15-13. GVC kept the Hawks at arms length in the 3rd, but South Hamilton’s offense roared to life in the 4th, putting up 19 points and coming away with a 41-32 win.

Isabel Swenson led the Hawks with 12 points and 9 rebounds, while Claire Hewitt had 10 points and 7 rebound. Morgan Pelham had a game-high 15 points and 18 rebounds for the Thunder.

The boys game followed as the Hawk boys faced a daunting task with the (2A) #4 Thunder, and GVC wasted no time in building a big lead, up 28-6 after the first quarter, a lead that grew to 53-19 at halftime. The Thunder kept the foot on the gas in the 2nd half to come away with a 93-31 win.

Jose Babcock led the Hawks with 11 points and 5 rebounds, while Grant Larson had 9 points. Jameson Scharnberg led the Thunder with 33 points, while Emiliano Barrantes was a block away from a triple-double with 20 points, 15 rebounds and 9 blocks.

South Hamilton basketball returns to action on Tuesday night, when they host long-time rivals Roland-Story in Heart of Iowa Conference action at South Hamilton High School in Jewell.
