The Roland-Story Norsemen basketball teams returned to action on Tuesday night, as they made the short trip east to take on the Nevada Cubs in Heart of Iowa Conference action at Nevada High School. Roland-Story’s girls entered at 2-1 and ranked #5 in Class 3A, while Roland-Story’s boys entered at 0-2.
Roland-Story’s girls got off to another fast start, leading Nevada 16-4 at the end of the first quarter. However, the Cubs were able to turn defense to offense in the 2nd quarter and trail just 29-13 at halftime. However, the 2nd half saw Roland-Story crank up the intensity, outscoring the Cubs 30-2 in the 2nd half for a 59-15 win.
The KQWC Player of the Game for the Norsemen was junior Brinley Carlson, who finished with 12 points off the bench. Riley Johnson also finished with 12 points, while Emily Kelly led Nevada with 6 points.
The boys game followed as Roland-Story searched for a response after a thrashing at the hands of Gilbert last Thursday night. Roland-Story responded with a stout first half defensively, as the Norsemen trailed the defending conference champions just 28-24 at halftime. The Norsemen kept within reach through the 3rd quarter, but a 15-0 run in the 4th quarter put the game out of reach as Nevada held on for a 58-45 win.
The KQWC Player of the Game was Norsemen sophomore Luke Thoreson, who finished with a game-high 20 points and 5 rebounds, while Jake Berggren finished with 10 points. John Nelson led Nevada with 19 points.
Roland-Story basketball returns to action on Friday night, when they host Perry in Heart of Iowa Conference action beginning at 6 PM at Roland-Story High School.
