South Hamilton basketball swept in home doubleheader with Nevada

The South Hamilton Hawks basketball teams returned to action on Friday night, as they hosted the Nevada Cubs in Heart of Iowa Conference action at South Hamilton High School in Jewell. Both boys and girls squads for the Hawks entered with records of 0-2.

South Hamilton’s girls led at the end of a defensive 1st quarter by an 8-7 score, but Nevada would hold the slim advantage at halftime by a score of 16-15. The Cubs would build on the lead to hold a 27-23 lead at the end of the 3rd quarter, and would hold off a late Hawk rally to pick up a 35-33 win.

Tessa Skartvedt would have a big night with a double-double of 10 points and 18 rebounds with 5 blocks, while Kaylen Trask finished with 9 points off 3, three-pointers. Nevada stats were not available on Bound as of Monday morning.

South Hamilton’s boys followed against the defending conference champs and Nevada would dominate from the outset, leading 18-4 at the end of the first, then ballooned to 39-9 at halftime. The Cubs kept their foot on the gas in the 2nd half en route to a dominant 65-20 win.

Sam Koehnk was the Hawks top scorer with 10 points and 5 rebounds, while Nevada’s John Nelson had a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds.

South Hamilton basketball returns to action on Tuesday night, when they travel to Des Moines to take on Saydel at Saydel High School beginning at 6 PM.
