The Roland-Story Norsemen basketball teams returned to action on Thursday night as they made the short trip west to take on the Gilbert Tigers in non-conference action at Gilbert High School in a girls/boys doubleheader.
Roland-Story’s girls opened in a top-5 battle with the Norsemen ranked #5 in 3A, and the Gilbert girls ranked #5 in 4A. Gilbert and Roland-Story would trade the lead throughout much of the first half, but Gilbert would hold a 9-point lead at halftime. The Tigers kept the Norsemen at arms length in the 3rd, but Roland-Story roared back to within 5 in the 4th. However, Gilbert would make the final push to come away with a 62-50 win.
Alyssa Jones had a game-high 20 points for the Norsemen, while Kam Lande recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Callie Hales led the Tigers with 14 points, while Ellie Henningsen had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Roland-Story boys followed against Gilbert and the Tigers came out of the gates hot, putting up 19 points in the first quarter to take a 19-5 lead. The lead continued to grow by leaps and bounds as Gilbert led 44-16 at halftime and ran the final up to 80-31.
Jake Berggren was the top scorer for the Norsemen, putting in 13 points in the loss. Gilbert stats were not available as of Friday morning.
Roland-Story basketball returns to action on Tuesday night, when they travel to Nevada to take on the Cubs in Heart of Iowa Conference action at 6 PM.
