The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowboys football team returned to action on Friday night, as they made the long trip to the Iowa Great Lakes region to take on the Spirit Lake Indians in Class 2A, District 1 action at Spirit Lake High School. CGD entered Friday with a record of 1-6 and 0-4 in district play, while Spirit Lake entered at 6-1, 4-0 in district play, and ranked #1 by Radio Iowa in 2A.
Both sides traded punts to start Friday night, as the Indians would take the lead on their 2nd drive as Cade Lundt hit Ethan Stecker on a screen pass for a 22-yard touchdown to put the Indians up 7-0. Spirit Lake would answer on their 2nd possession as Lundt hit Dylan Stecker for a 38-yard touchdown pass to put the Indians up 14-0. The scoring for the Indians would spill over into the 2nd quarter, as Will Ditsworth took a handoff up the middle for a 60-yard touchdown run to put Spirit Lake up 21-0. Spirit Lake would add a short Cade Lundt touchdown run to go up 28-0, before Lundt hit the bomb of all bombs on a 99-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Stecker to put the Indians up 35-0 at the halftime break.
The 3rd quarter would be scoreless, as would the first half of the 4th quarter before the Indians put together their final score of the night on a Cade Lundt pass to Ethan Stecker on the goalline to bring the score to the final of 42-0 Spirit Lake.
Selvin Gonzalez had the top offensive day for the Cowboys, rushing for 65 yards on 20 carries, while JD Morrical went 4-8 for 45 yards and an interception. The Cowboy defense did corral 2 interceptions with one from Henry Holmes and another from JD Morrical.
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows football will play in Week 9 in a non-district bout with Iowa Falls-Alden on Friday Night. The game will be at Cadet Field in Iowa Falls and will kickoff at 7 PM.
