The South Hamilton Hawks football team returned to action on Friday night, as they made the trip south into northern Dallas County to take on the Woodward-Granger Hawks in Class 1A, District 7 action at Uthe Field in Woodward. South Hamilton entered at 3-3 and 3-0 in district play, while Woodward-Granger entered at 5-1 and 3-0 in district play.
Woodward-Granger took the football first and scored on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Talan Fuson to Kane Mahler-Moreno on their opening drive to put the Hawks up 7-0. South Hamilton would punt on the following drive, but the Hawks forced a Talan Fuson interception on the following drive and scored on a 6-yard run by Nick Severseike to make the score 7-6. Things would take a negative turn for South Hamilton as quarterback Braden Young exited the game with an injury on the 2-point conversion attempt. Woodward-Granger would score on the following drive on a 14-yard run by Talan Fuson to go up 14-6. South Hamilton’s ensuing drive would stall as WG answered with a 27-yard touchdown pass from Fuson to Mahler-Moreno to go up 21-6. South Hamilton responded with two big passing plays with Kolby Hodnefield at quarterback, his first pass a 35-yard completion to Kaden Dean, his 2nd a 36-yard touchdown pass to Landon Sogard to cut the score to 21-12. However, Woodward-Granger would put up one more touchdown before half on a 26-yard pass from Fuson to Max Dalton to go up 28-12.
The second half would belong to Woodward-Granger, scoring 21 unanswered points as the Hawks came away with a 49-12 win, and clinched their first district title since 2012.
Kolby Hodnefield would go 2-for-10 passing with 71 yards, a touchdown and a pick, while rushing for 22 yards on 6 carries. Ashton Williams led the Hawks in rushing with 38 yards on 9 carries.
South Hamilton football returns to action on Friday night, when they host Grand View Christian in their regular season finale at Bill Taylor Field in Jewell at 7 PM.
