The Webster City Lynx football team returns to action on Friday night, when they host the Charles City Comets on homecoming night at Lynx Field, in Class 3A, District 2 action. Webster City enters at 2-4, while Charles City enters at 3-3. The Lynx won last season’s meeting in Charles City by a score of 49-13, as the all-time series is tied 8-8.
Charles City enters Friday with a 3-3 record, starting the year 3-0 with wins over Oelwein, South Tama and Waterloo East to start the year, but since have seen lopsided losses to Mason City, Algona and Humboldt. The Comets offense has been ground-based throughout the season, as junior Deacon Caspers leads the district in rushing with 1,072 yards and a district-high 12 rushing touchdowns. Caspers consistency on the ground has provided balance for sophomore quarterback Patrick Bruening, who’s thrown for 342 yards, 4 touchdowns and 4 interceptions on 50% completion. Bruening’s favorite target has been senior wide out Kaden Littleton, who’s caught 14 passes for 249 yards and 3 touchdowns. The offensive line is also a healthy mix of juniors and seniors for the Comets.
Defensively, the Comets linebacking core has been no stranger to producing and producing big plays. Sophomore linebacker Tyler Heitz leads the team with 27 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. Jackson Ruzicka has 25 tackles, while senior Kamden Meek has excelled in getting in the back field, with 15.5 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. Bennett Hansen has also added 15.5 tackles as well. The defensive line has seen rotational pieces step up, as senior Ryder Biwer has 9 tackles and 2 tackles for loss, while Jackson Warnke has 7.5 tackles and 2 tackles for loss. The defensive backfield has been on the green side, with new players stepping into the fold as senior Ezekiel Causey and junior Victor Ward Jr. have one interception each, as Ward Jr. leads the secondary with 21 tackles.
Webster City will look to build off their win over Hampton-Dumont-CAL, where the defense made many big plays against Bulldogs. Attention will be focused on Deacon Caspers for the Lynx defense, while the Lynx offense will likely try a steady dose of Cael Nixon and Jaxon Griffith on the perimeter.
Kickoff is slated for 7 PM from Lynx Field on Friday Night, and the game can be heard on 92.9/1570 KZWC or streaming online at kqradio.com.
