Webster City football holds off late Hampton-Dumont-CAL rally, 18-16

The Webster City Lynx football team returned to action on Friday night, as they hosted the Bulldogs of Hampton-Dumont-CAL in Class 3A, District 2 action for senior night at Lynx Field. Webster City entered at 1-4 and 0-1 in the district, while Hampton-Dumont-CAL is 2-3 and 0-1 in the district.

Webster City would come out of the gates firing in the first half, scoring on their first 2 drives to go up 14-0 off a pair of short touchdown runs by quarterback Luke Estlund. Hampton-Dumont-CAL would fumble after the second touchdown, but recovered it in their own endzone for a safety to put Webster City up 16-0. Hampton-Dumont-CAL would get on the board in the 2nd quarter with a 9-yard touchdown run by Colin Bird to bring the score to 16-8 for the halftime break.

The Lynx defense would again make a big play in the third quarter, sacking Ryder Strother in the endzone for the second safety on the night to put Webster City up 18-8. Hampton-Dumont-CAL would get another touchdown off a pass from Ryder Strother to Colin Bird to make it 18-16, but the Bulldogs would get no closer as Webster City held on for the win.

Cael Nixon would lead Webster City in rushing with 107 yards on 26 carries, while Jaxon Griffith had 75 yards on 10 carries. Luke Estlund went 1-1 for 13 yards, while rushing for 18 yards and 2 touchdowns. Jayden Weinzetl had the top game defensively with 8.5 tackles, 4 tackles for loss and .5 a sack.

Webster City football returns to action next Friday, when they host Charles City for homecoming at Lynx Field, with kickoff at 7 PM.
