The Webster City Lynx football team returned to action on Friday night, as they opened Class 3A, District 2 play against a long-time North Central Conference rival in the Clear Lake Lions at Lions Field in Clear Lake. Webster City entered at 1-3, while Clear Lake entered at 3-1 and ranked #5 in Class 3A.
Clear Lake got on the board first on their opening possession, capped off by a Sam Dodge 30-yard touchdown run to put the Lions up 8-0 after a 2-point conversion. Webster City would answer before the end of the quarter with a Jaxon Griffith 17-yard touchdown run to make the score 8-7 Clear Lake, as that score would stick until halftime.
The 2nd half saw the Lions strike quickly, as Jaxson McIntire found Alex Kerr over the top for a 69-yard touchdown pass to make the score 15-7. Webster City would respond as Cael Nixon scored on a 20-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 15-15, with the Lynx successful on a 2-point conversion attempt. The Lions again went to the air deep, as McIntire hit Trevor Theobald for an 86-yard touchdown pass to give Clear Lake a 22-15 lead. Webster City would fumble on their ensuing possession, and the Lions capitalized on the short field with a 3-yard touchdown run by Titan Schmitt to make it 29-15 Clear Lake. Webster City would bring it with in 8, as Cael Nixon score on a 4-yard touchdown run to make it 29-21, but Clear Lake would pull away from their with 3 4th quarter touchdowns to cap a 49-21 win.
Cael Nixon would lead Webster City with 115 yards and 2 touchdowns on 25 carries, while Jaxon Griffith rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Luke Estlund would go 1-2 for 14 yards and rush for 41 yards, while Jayden Weinzetl would have a big game with 7.5 tackles, 2 tackles for loss and a sack.
Webster City football returns to action on Friday night, when they host Hampton-Dumont-CAL in Class 3A, District 2 action beginning at 7 PM at Lynx Field.
