The Webster City Lynx football team returns to action on Friday night, as they open district play in Class 3A, District 2, by traveling to Cerro Gordo County to take on the #5 Clear Lake Lions at Lions Field. Clear Lake won last year’s matchup at Lynx Field by a score of 10-2, but Webster City holds an all-time series lead of 47-25-3, dating back to 1938.
Clear Lake enters after their first loss of the season in a road battle with 4A-foe Waverly-Shell Rock, as the Go-Hawks game-winning field goal with 4 seconds remaining secured the upset of the then top-ranked Lions. Clear Lake still remains a juggernaut despite the loss, as they’re led by sophomore quarterback Jaxson McIntire. McIntire has thrown for 764 yards and 13 touchdowns, while rushing for another 168 yards and a touchdown. Iowa-commit Thomas Meyer has been McIntire’s favorite target, catching 10 passes for 259 yards and 5 touchdowns. Alex Kerr has been an explosive threat as well, catching 5 passes for 285 yards and 4 touchdowns, averaging 57 yards per reception. Titan Schmitt has been a mainstay on the ground, rushing for nearly 600 yards and 5 touchdowns through the non-district slate. In all, the Lions are averaging 10.4 yards per play through the non-district slate, and have racked up nearly 2,000 yards of total offense.
Defensively, the front four has been the most impressive group thus far for the Lions, led by the aforementioned-Thomas Meyer. Meyer has tallied 12.5 tackles, 7 tackles for loss and 2 sacks, while fellow senior Henry Bunn has tallied 8.5 tackles and 4 tackles for loss. Sam Dodge has lead the linebacking core, amassing a team-high 21 tackles with 3.5 tackles for loss and a sack, while Raif Baack has tallied 11.5 tackles, 3 tackles for loss and an interception. Luke Fuhrman leads the defensive back group with 16 tackles and 2 tackles for loss, while Jaxson McIntire has the lone interception in the back 4.
Webster City will look to get back on track after 3 straight losses following their season-opening win over Fort Dodge. The Lynx will need to control the clock by running the football and limiting Clear Lake possessions to have a chance to score an upset on Friday.
Kickoff will be at 7 PM from Lions Field on Friday Night, and can be heard on 92.9/1570 KZWC or streaming online at kqradio.com.
