The Eagle Grove Eagles football team returned to action on Friday night, as they made the trip into northwest Iowa to take on the Rebels of Sioux Central in the Eagles Class 1A, District 2 opener at Sioux Central High School in Sioux Rapids. Eagle Grove entered at 0-3, while Sioux Central entered at 2-1.
Both teams would trade punts on their opening possessions, but after a good return for the Rebels, quarterback Owen Mills hit tight end Titus Koster for a 40-yard touchdown pass to put the Rebels up 7-0. The Eagles defense would stiffen from there, and the offense managed to march a drive inside the 10, but were unable to score as Sioux Central got the football back. The Rebels would punt, but a muffed punt gave the Rebels a short field and a score 5 plays later on a 1-yard touchdown run by Kinnick Fahrenkrog to make it 13-0. Eagle Grove went to the air on the following drive, driving it deep into Rebel territory only to have a Brett Ascherl pass picked off which would end the half with the Eagles down 13-0.
Sioux Central would take the ball to start the 2nd half and march the field in 5 plays, capping the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run by Kinnick Fahrenkrog to put the Rebels up 19-0 after a failed 2-point conversion. Another Eagle punt would result in a big return and another short field for the Rebels, who scored on Kinnick Fahrenkrog’s 3rd touchdown of the night to make it 27-0. The Rebels continued to roll by recovering a pooch kick on the ensuing kickoff as Owen Mills capped the drive with a 6-yard touchdown run to make the score 34-0. The Rebels would add a field goal in the 4th quarter to make it 37-0, before Josh Miller scored the lone Eagle touchdown on the night off a 21-yard run to make the final 37-8.
Josh Miller led the Eagles in rushing, carrying 8 times for 69 yards and a touchdown, while Leelan Spencer carried 9 times for 34 yards. Brett Ascherl went 2-6 for 34 yards and interception, while Jaxon Morris had the top defensive day with 4.5 tackles and 2 sacks.
