South Hamilton football downed in opener by South Hardin, 53-20

The South Hamilton Hawks football team opened their 2024 regular season on Friday night, as they made the trip east on Highway 175 to take on their rivals in the South Hardin Tigers in non-district action at Tiger Field in Eldora. South Hamilton won last year’s meeting by a score of 20-14 in Jewell.

It was a slow start to the game, but South Hardin was first on the board with a touchdown in the 1st quarter to take a 7-0 lead. In the 2nd quarter, the offenses exploded, with the Tigers putting up 33 points to South Hamilton’s 12 in the frame to hold a 40-12 halftime lead. The 2nd half saw things even out as each team traded a score as the Tigers led 46-20 at the end of the 3rd, before punctuating the win with a 4th quarter touchdown to take a 53-20 win.

The Hawks still managed to rush for 253 yards on Friday night, led by junior running back Kolby Hodnefield, who rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown on 9 carries, while senior Ashton Williams rushed for 90 yards and a touchdown from his fullback spot. Braden Young would go 5-for-8 throwing the ball with 49 yards, a touchdown and 2 interceptions.

South Hamilton football returns to action on Friday night, when they travel to State Center to take on West Marshall in non-district action at 7 PM.
