The Roland-Story Norsemen and Clarion-Goldfield-Dows baseball teams returned to action on Tuesday night, as they faced off with one another in Class 2A, Substate 2 quarterfinal action at Norsemen Field in Story City. Roland-Story entered with a record of 14-17, while Clarion-Goldfield-Dows entered at 12-16.
Roland-Story would find ways to score runs consistently all night long, with the Norsemen putting up 2 in the first off a Jake Knoll RBI double and a Wyatt Ramus bases-loaded walk to go up 2-0. Two more runs scored in the 2nd as William Zamzow garnered an RBI single and Sam Knoll scored on a wild pitch to go up 4-0. Roland-Story would put up 2 more runs in the 4th and a run in the 5th to lead 7-0, before the Cowboys put up a run in the 6th off a Huxley Lingenfelter RBI double to make it 7-1. Roland-Story added 2 more runs in the bottom of the 6th before capping off a 9-1 victory.
William Zamzow had the top Norsemen day at the plate, reaching all 5 times as he went 2-for-2 with an RBI and drew 3 hit-by-pitches, while Jake Knoll went 1-for-3 with an RBI double. Brett Schmitz went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a single, while picking up the win pitching 5 innings, allowing no runs on 2 hits and striking out 8. Mason Allen had the top CGD day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a pair of singles and a hit by pitch, while Huxley Lingenfelter went 1-for-3 with an RBI double. Owen Sweeney was the losing pitcher, going 2 innings and allowing 4 runs on 3 hits and striking out 2.
Roland-Story advances to face Dike-New Hartford in their Class 2A, Substate 2 semifinal on Saturday Night at Norsemen Field in Story City with first pitch at 7 PM. Clarion-Goldfield-Dows ends their season with a record of 12-17, their most wins in a season since 2013.
