The South Hamilton Hawks softball team returned to action on Monday night, as they hosted the Grundy Center Spartans in Class 2A, Region 6 first round action at the Mike Penning Athletic Complex in Jewell. South Hamilton entered at 13-16, while Grundy Center entered at 10-17.
Grundy Center struck first with a Lucy Lebo RBI single to take a 1-0 lead, before the Hawks answered back with Tanna Thompson scoring on a wild pitch to tie it at 1-1. The Spartans reclaimed the lead on an Evelyn Gerdes RBI single at 2-1, before a prosperous 3rd inning that put Grundy Center up 6-1. The Hawks and Spartans would trade a run in the 4th to make it 7-2, before the Hawks added another run in the 5th to make it 7-3. Grundy Center would deal a crushing blow in the 7th with a 2-run RBI double from Carlie Willis as the Spartans captured a 9-4 win.
Kendra Hoversten would go 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Makena Galetich went 2-for-5 and Ashlyn Erickson went 2-for-4. Galetich was charged for the loss, allowing 9 runs on 15 hits while not recording a strikeout.
Grundy Center advances to face top-seeded Alburnett on Wednesday night at 7 PM. South Hamilton’s season ends with a record of 13-17.
