Clarion-Goldfield-Dows baseball knocks off Eagle Grove in 2A Substate 1st Round, 6-5

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows and Eagle Grove Eagles baseball teams returned to action on Saturday evening, as both teams made the trip to Hardin County to take on one another at South Hardin High School in Eldora in Class 2A, Substate 2 action. CGD entered Saturday at 11-16, while Eagle Grove entered at 14-9.

Eagle Grove got out to a good start on Saturday, putting up a run in the 1st, 2 runs in the 2nd and a run in the 3rd to take a 4-0 lead after 4 innings. CGD mounted a rally in the 5th, putting up 3 runs to cut the score to 4-3, but Eagle Grove added another run in the 5th to make it 5-3. The Cowboy rally continued into the 6th, tying the game with 2 runs at 5-5, before Huxley Lingenfelter hit a pinch-hit RBI double in the 7th to give CGD a 6-5 lead, before the Cowboys shut down the Eagles in the 7th for the upset victory.

Landen Kakacek would go 2-for-3 with 2 singles and an RBI, while Calvin Schluttenhoeffer went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Caden Hankins went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Carson Nesheim pitched the complete game, allowing 5 runs (3 earned) on 10 hits and striking out 6. Syrus Willard went 4-for-4 with a double, 3 singles and an RBI for Eagle Grove, while Jake Jeske went 3-for-3 with 3 singles. Jake Jeske was the losing pitcher, pitching 2 innings, allowing 2 runs on no hits and striking out 3.

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows baseball advances to face Roland-Story at Norsemen Field in Story City in the Class 2A, Substate 2 quarterfinal, with 1st pitch at 7 PM on Tuesday night on 95.7 KQWC or streaming online at kqradio.com. Eagle Grove’s season ends at 14-10.
