The Roland-Story Norsemen baseball team returned to action on Monday evening, as they made the trip to northern Iowa to take on the (1A) #3 Newman Catholic Knights in non-conference action at Newman Catholic High School. Roland-Story entered at 14-14, while Newman Catholic entered at 24-5.
Defense would rule much of the day on Monday, as Newman Catholic put up a run in the 2nd and 3rd to take an initial 2-0 lead after 3 innings. Following scoreless frames in the 4th and 5th, the Knights extended their lead with 3 runs to take a 5-0 lead, before making it the final. Brett Schmitz would take the loss despite pitching well, allowing 5 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits and 5 strikeouts.
Game 2 would be even closer, as the first 5 innings went scoreless, before Newman scratched across 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th to take a 2-0 lead. The Knights would retire the Norsemen in the 7th to pick up a 2-0 win. Cael Faber would pitch a gem in the loss, going 6 innings and allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits and striking out 1.
Roland-Story baseball returns to action Tuesday, when they host Estherville-Lincoln Central at Norsemen Field in Story City at 5 PM.
