South Hamilton baseball shuts out Roland-Story in conference finale, 3-0

The South Hamilton Hawks and Roland-Story Norsemen baseball teams returned to action on Tuesday night, as they renewed their long-standing rivalry at South Hamilton High School in Jewell. South Hamilton entered at 8-10, while Roland-Story entered at 13-11.

After a scoreless 1st inning, South Hamilton would scratch across a run on a Connor Deppe infield RBI single to put the Hawks up 1-0, before South Hamilton put up another run in the 3rd on a bloop RBI single by Braden Young to make it 2-0. The lead would hold a 2-0 until the 6th, when the Hawks drove in a run on a Roland-Story error to go up 3-0, before Preston Van De Pol retired the side in the 7th for a 3-0 win.

Braden Young would go 1-for-2 with an RBI single, while Connor Deppe was 1-for-2 with an RBI single. Preston Van De Pol pitched a masterpiece, pitching a 4-hit shutout with 4 strikeouts. Roland-Story was led by a 1-for-2 performance Cael Faber, while Brett Schmitz, Aiden Frey and Colin Willis recorded hits for the Norsemen. Brett Schmitz was charged with the loss, allowing 3 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits and striking out 8 in 5.1 innings.

South Hamilton baseball returns to action on July 1st, when they travel to Pocahontas to take on Pocahontas Area at 7:30 PM. Roland-Story returns to action on Wednesday, as they travel to southern Iowa to take on the Lenox Tigers in a varsity doubleheader beginning at 6 PM.
