The South Hamilton Hawks baseball team returned to action on Monday night, as they made the trip to State Center to take on the (2A) #1 West Marshall Trojans in Heart of Iowa Conference action at Schilling Field. South Hamilton entered at 5-9, while West Marshall entered at 23-1.
Monday’s game would be a high-level pitchers dual between South Hamilton’s Preston Van De Pol and West Marshall’s Noah DeSotel. The scoreless tie was broken in the 5th by a Braden Young opposite-field home run to put the Hawks ahead 1-0. West Marshall knotted things up as a run scored on a Preston Van De Pol balk to make it 1-1. Scoring would not happen again until the 8th inning, when South Hamilton took the lead off an Owen Duns RBI single at 2-1. However, Evan Siegert and AJ Dee tied the game and eventually won the game on a walk-off for a 3-2 final.
Preston Van De Pol pitched 7 innings, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits and striking out 5 in the loss. Noah DeSotel pitched all 8 innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and striking out 11.
South Hamilton baseball returns to action on Tuesday, when they host West Hancock at South Hamilton High School, beginning at 5:15 PM.
