Webster City soccer falls in 2A Quarterfinal to Bishop Heelan, 5-1

The Webster City Lynx boys soccer team returned to action on Wednesday, as they made the trip down to Des Moines to compete in the Class 2A State Tournament against the Crusaders of Bishop Heelan at the Cownie Sports Complex. Webster City entered at 15-1, while Bishop Heelan entered at 14-3.

For as prosperous as Wednesday’s start would be for Bishop Heelan, it would be equally as nightmarish for the Lynx, as they were called for 2 inadvertent handballs inside the goal box in the first 10 minutes. This led to penalty kicks from Dylan Karnes and George Tsiobanos and put Bishop Heelan up 2-0 within the first 10 minutes.

The Crusaders added another goal before halftime from Andres Gonzalez to lead 3-0. Webster City would try to attack with more aggression in the 2nd half, but Heelan was able to flip the field and score off a goal in the 61st minute from an Andres Gonzalez penalty kick to make it 4-0, and then Sergio Mijangos would add the finishing touches with a goal in the 71st minute to bring it to 5-0. Webster City would get on the board in the 79th minute with an Eduardo Perez penalty kick to bring the final score to 5-1.

Bishop Heelan advances to face top-seeded Gilbert in the 2A Semifinals, as Webster City’s season ends with a record of 15-2.
