South Hamilton boys take 3rd in 2A, Cap Prosperous 2024 KQRadio State Meet

Day 3 of the 2024 Iowa High School State Track and Field Championships arrived Saturday morning, as the sweltering sellout crowd matched the sweltering heat mother nature brought on the meets final day.

The story of the day would be the South Hamilton boys track team, which started the day off with a runner-up finish in the 2A Boys Sprint Medley in a school-record time of 1:32.81 with the team of Severseike-Gunderson-Hodnefield-Koehnk. KQWC Radio caught up with the quartet after the race.

South Hamilton would have to wait for the end of the day for a shot at redemption, and did just that by winning the 2A Boys 4×400 in a new 2A state meet-record time of 3:16.35 with the team of Ty Koehnk-Reece Ricke-Nick Severseike-Kolby Hodnefield, which also set a new school record and was the 8th-fastest 4×400 in state history. KQWC Radio caught up with the quartet following their championship run.

The win gave South Hamilton a 3rd place finish in the Class 2A State Meet with 42 points, the highest finish in school history at the state track and field meet. Mediapolis would win the team title with 47 points, while Spirit Lake was 2nd with 43 points. KQWC Radio caught up with South Hamilton head coach Kyle Galetich following the team’s recognition.

Roland-Story’s girls would also see plenty of action in the final day of the state track meet, as they opened the day with a 3rd place finish in the 2A Girls Sprint Medley in a time of 1:50.23 with the quartet of Sporleder-Kilstofte-Petersen-Lande. The quartet was pleased with their performance afterwards.

From there, junior Kam Lande would place 8th in the 2A 200m Dash in a time of 26.50 seconds, as the afternoon rolled into the evening. The Norsemen’s 4×100 would finish 3rd in a hot 4×100, in a school-record time of 49.06 with the team of Adalyn Sporleder-Kennedy Petersen-Lauryn Kilstofte-Kam Lande. The quartet showed emotion following their final run together as a group.

Roland-Story closed their 2024 State Meet with 21 points and tying for 11th with Hinton and Albia. Van Meter repeated as state champions with 63 points.

Saturday marked the close of the 2024 Track and Field season, and it was one many in the KQRadio area won’t soon forget.
