Eagle Grove baseball routs West Bend-Mallard in opener, 16-6

The Eagle Grove Eagles baseball team opened their 2024 season on Monday night, as they hosted the Wolverines of West Bend-Mallard in non-conference action at Greenwood Park in Eagle Grove.

Both sides would trade blows early on, tied at 2-2 after the first, before Eagle Grove grabbed a 3-2 lead after the 2nd. The game would be tied at 5-5 after 4 innings before the Wolverines grabbed a 6-5 lead after the top of the 5th. In the bottom of the frame, Eagle Grove put 10 runs on the board to take a commanding 15-6 lead. Eagle Grove would add another run in the 6th, before closing it out in the 7th for a 16-6 win.

Junior right fielder Brett Ascherl had a big day, going 3-for-3 with 2 singles and a double, with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. Senior center fielder Drake Canavan went 1-for-3 with a triple, 3 walks drawn and 3 RBI, while senior 2nd basemen Mack Morgan went 3-for-5 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI. Jake Jeske picked up the win, pitching 4 innings, allow 7 hits, 5 runs (1 earned) and struck out 7.

Eagle Grove returns to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Webster City to take on the Lynx at 7:30 PM on 92.9/1570 AM KZWC or online at kqradio.com.
