The Webster City Lynx and Eagle Grove Eagles boys track team opened their 2024 outdoor season on Friday evening, as they made the familiar trek into Humboldt County to compete in the annual Charlie Bunn Relays at Humboldt High School. The Lynx were joined by the host Wildcats, as well as Algona, Boone, Clear Lake, Emmetsburg and Pocahontas Area.
Webster City would come away with two gold medals in Friday’s meet, both of them belonging to senior Jaxon Cherry. Cherry won the boys discus with a throw of 154′ 4″, following that up by winning the shot put with a throw of 51′ 4″. Jayden Weinzetl would also put together a good day individually, placing 2nd in the 200m dash in a time of 23.60 seconds. Weinzetl would also place 3rd in the 100m dash in a time of 11.73 seconds. Webster City would pick one other 2nd place finish from Justin Callahan in the 1600m run, as Callahan would run a 4:53.80.
Eagle Grove would see just one top 3 finish, courtesy of Landon Mrla in the long jump. Mrla would place 2nd with a mark of 19. 1.5″, behind winner Elliot Carlson of Humboldt, who won with a jump of 20. 8.5″. The Eagles top placing relays would be the 4×200, which placed 4th in a time of 1:40.28, and the 4×800, which placed 4th in 9:50.94.
Webster City would place 5th with a total of 84 points, while Eagle Grove placed 7th with 37 points. Algona was the team champion with 141 points.
Webster City returns to action on Monday, as they compete in the Southeast Valley Invitational in Gowrie. Eagle Grove also returns to action on Monday, where they’ll compete at the Fort Dodge Invitational at Dodger Stadium.
