Fuller Hall in Webster City announced on Wednesday that they would be holding a celebration of 6-on-6 high school girls basketball in Iowa on Wednesday, April 10th from 1-3 PM. Jean Eells says that the event is open to not only former players, but “coaches, managers, cheerleaders and statisticians from any town and any year”.
In the release Eells mentions the soaring popularity of the women’s game as the reasoning for putting together the event. “With all the attention finally being paid to women’s college basketball, maybe it’s time to celebrate those of us who literally carried the ball for girls’ sports,” Eells said.
The KQ-Radio area saw a long, storied history in the 6-on-6 game, with 5 current or former iterations of schools claiming state championships in the 6-on-6 class. Kamrar won the first area title in 1948, followed by Goldfield in 1955. South Hamilton would win a 6-on-6 championship in 1965 (defeating the largest school in Iowa in Valley, West Des Moines), followed by Roland-Story in 1972. Hubbard-Radcliffe would then win the final 6-on-6 championship in state history, led by the late, great Lisa Brinkmeyer, defeating Atlantic 85-66. Fort Dodge also won a 6-on-6 title in 1985 as well.
In all, KQ-Radio area towns and had 44 different teams qualify for the 6-on-6 state tournament since it was sanctioned by the IGHSAU in the early 20’s.
