The Webster City Lynx and Eagle Grove Eagles wrestling teams returned to action on Saturday morning, as they competed in their Class 2A, District 10 Tournament at Webster City High School. The Lynx and Eagles were joined by AP-GC, Gilbert, Nevada, Southeast Valley, West Marshall and Winterset.
Webster City would see 5 wrestlers battle their way to a berth in Wednesday’s state tournament. The first was top-ranked Linden Phetxoumphone at 113 pounds, who defeated AP-GC’s Owen Primus via fall in the semifinals, before defeating West Marshall freshman Jon Gonzalez in a 5-3 decision in the championship. Carson Doolittle would be the next qualifier at 126 pounds, as he pinned Gilbert’s John Artz in the semifinals, before pinning AP-GC’s Carter Liston in the finals.
Luke Estlund would be the next qualifier, winning the district title at 175 pounds. Estlund pinned AP-GC’s Klayton Freed in the semifinals, before pinning Eagle Grove’s Jayden Kreitlow in the championship to capture the automatic bid. The next qualifier came at 190 pounds as Carson Bertran would place 2nd, pinning Nevada’s Carson Reed in the first round, before taking a 4-3 decision over Winterset’s Carson Bellamy. Bertran would then lose to AP-GC’s Maison Copp in the finals. The final qualifier for the Lynx was senior Landon Griffin at 285 pounds, as Griffin defeated Winterset’s Seth Vanderlinden in the semifinals, before losing a 3-1 decision to AP-GC’s Trent Cakerice in the finals to finish 2nd. Other placers for Webster City included 3rd place finishes from Gavin Wynkoop at 138 and Tristan Mason at 150, and a 4th place finish from Eli Estlund at 215.
Eagle Grove would also send 5 athletes down to the State Wrestling Tournament, as Dylan Terwilliger would place 2nd at 106 pounds. Terwilliger would defeat West Marshall’s James Decker in a 7-0 decision in the semifinals, before getting pinned by Nevada’s Urijah Courter in the finals to place 2nd. Mack Morgan would be the next qualifier at 120, pinning APGC’s Aiden Merrill in the quarterfinals, before winning an 8-6 decision against West Marshall’s Jack Decker in the semifinals, then falling to Nevada’s Kaden Weber by pin in the title match.
Connor Christopher would be the next qualifier at 144 pounds, pinning Webster City’s Jaysen Vankham in the quarterfinals, before losing via fall to West Marshall’s Kinnick Geers. Christopher would then win an 11-1 major decision over Gilbert’s Cody Puck, before winning a 6-4 decision over AP-GC’s Justin Knaack in the 3rd place match to set up a win-or-go-home 2nd place match. Christopher would dominate Winterset’s Gavin Day, winning a 9-2 decision to qualify for the state tournament. Hayden Schafer would be the Eagles next qualifier at 150 pounds, as he pinned West Marshall’s Holden Simms in the quarterfinals, before taking a 3-2 decision over Webster City’s Tristan Mason in the semifinals. Schafer would then fall in the championship by a similar 3-2 margin to Winterset’s Jax Jensen to place 2nd.
The final qualifier for the Eagles would be Jayden Kreitlow at 175 pounds, as he would pin Gilbert’s John Beardsley in the quarterfinals, and win a 9-2 decision over West Marshall’s Dawson Goodman in the semifinals, before getting pinned Webster City’s Luke Estlund in the title match. Kreitlow would have to wrestler for 2nd, winning a 3-0 decision to AP-GC’s Klayton Freed to qualify. The Eagles also picked up a pair of 4th-place finishes from Cooper Thacker at 132 and Jesus Baez at 285.
Webster City would place 3rd with 147 points, while Eagle Grove placed 5th with 103 points. Winterset was the team champion with 169 points.
