The Eagle Grove Eagles basketball teams returned to action on Tuesday night, as they made the drive into Hancock County to take on the Cardinals of Garner-Hayfield-Ventura in Top of Iowa West action. The Eagle girls came in at 0-20, while the Eagle boys entered at 9-10.
GHV would get out to a fast start on Tuesday, jumping out to a 15-4 lead after the 1st quarter, a lead that was extended to 26-10 at halftime. Eagle Grove’s offense would find some footing in the 3rd quarter, but the GHV offense was too much in the 2nd half as they topped off a 61-24 win. Jenna Pringnitz led the Cardinals with 12 points.
The boys game followed as Eagle Grove looked to bounce back from their Monday night loss to CGD, but the 1st quarter proved to be another defensive struggle as the Eagles trailed 7-5. The 2nd quarter saw the GHV offense open it up, putting up 26 points in the frame and leading 33-23 at halftime. The Cardinals looked poised to pull away in the 3rd quarter, leading by as much as 17, but the Eagles would scratch and claw their way back into the game and took the lead late in the 4th quarter off a Jake Jeske three. After GHV took the lead on the following possession, senior Tyreon Franklin hit the go-ahead three with 5.4 seconds left to give Eagle Grove a 60-58 win. Franklin would be the game’s leading scorer with 27 points, 25 of them coming in the 2nd half, while Aiden Hawe finished with 16 points for GHV.
Eagle Grove’s girls return to action on Saturday, when they travel to Algona for their Class 3A, Region 2 first round matchup against the Bulldogs. Eagle Grove’s boys return to action on Monday night, when they host Southeast Valley in their Class 2A, District 11 first round matchup.
