Clarion-Goldfield-Dows basketball sweeps doubleheader at Wells Fargo Arena against Eagle Grove

The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows and Eagle Grove Eagles basketball teams renewed their long-standing rivalry at a special place on Monday night: Wells Fargo Arena in downtown Des Moines. The Cowgirls came in at 2-16, while the Cowboys were 4-13. The Eagle girls came in at 0-19, while the Eagle boys were 9-9.

It would be a back-and-forth affair all night long for the girls game, with the game tied at 10-10 after the first quarter, and Eagle Grove would claim a 28-26 halftime lead. Neither side would lead by more than 5 points, as CGD reclaimed the lead at 46-44 going into the 4th quarter. The game would go down to the final seconds, as Celeste Figueroa’s free throw, which would have tied the game with 2 seconds left, was waved off by a lane violation to secure a 56-55 win for the Cowgirls. The KQWC Player of the Game were CGD’s Kennedy Jackson and Eagle Grove’s Chloe Steil, Jackson had 16 points and 4 three-pointers, while Steil had a game-high 18 points.

The boys game would follow as defenses would rule throughout the night for both sides, as Eagle Grove led 15-9 after the first quarter, but CGD kept within striking distance, trailing just 25-21 at halftime. In the second half, it was CGD’s defense that rose to the challenge limiting the high-flying Eagle offense as the Cowboys would come back and hold on to a 51-46 win. The KQWC Players of the Game were CGD’s Chaz Lane and Eagle Grove’s Drake Canavan, Lane had a game-high 20 points for the Cowboys, while Canavan led the Eagles with 11 points.

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows returns to action on Tuesday night, as they travel to Algona to face the Bulldogs in North Central Conference action. Eagle Grove wraps up the regular season on Tuesday, when they travel to Garner-Hayfield-Ventura in Top of Iowa West action.
