The Roland-Story Norsemen basketball teams returned to action on Friday night, as they traveled to Nevada to take on the Cubs in Heart of Iowa Conference action at Nevada High School. The Norsemen girls entered at 17-1, while the Norsemen boys entered at 15-2.
It was another dominant start for Maddie Gelber and the Norsemen girls, as they led 29-2 after the first quarter. Nevada’s offense would pick up a tad in the 2nd quarter, but the Norsemen held a 45-14 lead, before blowing the game out of reach in the 2nd half for a 72-23 win. Matilde Motta led the Norsemen with 13 points, while Elizabeth Ihle and Claire Truesdell had 12 points each.
The boys game followed with a battle for a share of the Heart of Iowa Conference title. In the first half, it was the Norsemen defense that dominated, as Roland-Story led 24-8 at a juncture in the 2nd quarter, and led 28-17 at halftime. In the 2nd half, the Cubs began to light it up from 3, as they took the lead in the 4th quarter. The final minutes were back and forth, and Jonovan Wilkinson’s miss on a 27-foot runner as time expired gave Nevada a 50-47 win and at least a share of the conference title. Jonovan Wilkinson had a game-high 21 points, while Jacob Khounsourath led the Cubs with 18 points.
Roland-Story basketball returns to action on Monday night, when they travel to the Des Moines metro to take on the Van Meter Bulldogs in non-conference action, beginning at 6 PM.
