The South Hamilton Hawks basketball teams returned to action on Tuesday night, as they hosted the Nevada Cubs in Heart of Iowa Conference action at South Hamilton High School in Jewell. The Hawk girls entered at 11-6, while the Hawk boys entered at 15-1.
South Hamilton girls were in search of the first-ever season sweep of the Cubs, and got off to a promising start, leading 8-6 after the first quarter, slightly extended to 17-14 at halftime. The 3rd quarter would prove to be the deciding factor, with the Hawks out scoring the Cubs 17-8 in the frame, before holding on for a 43-35 win. Ashlyn Erickson had a game-high 22 points for the Hawks in the win.
The boys game followed with South Hamilton looking to avenge their only loss of the season to the Cubs, but it was Nevada that had the upper-hand early, leading 16-12 after the first quarter, although South Hamilton kept in close headed into halftime, trailing 33-27. However, things came off the rails in the 3rd quarter with Nevada out scoring the Hawks 26-12 in the 3rd quarter to lead 59-39, as the Cubs closed out a 75-56 win.
South Hamilton basketball returns to action on Friday, when they travel to Monroe to take on PCM in Heart of Iowa Conference action.
