The Roland-Story Norsemen basketball teams returned to action on Tuesday night, as they welcomed in the PCM Mustangs in Heart of Iowa Conference action at Roland-Story High School in Story City. Roland-Story’s girls entered with a record of 16-1 and ranked #4 in Class 3A, while Roland-Story’s boys entered at 14-2.
It was a game that started like a track meet for the girls, with Roland-Story leading PCM 23-17 after the first quarter, a lead that was extended to 42-28 by halftime. The 3rd quarter would prove to be the difference maker, with the Norsemen outscoring the Mustangs 27-10 to take a commanding 69-38 lead, before closing a 75-40 final score. The win guaranteed at least a share of the Heart of Iowa Conference title for the Roland-Story women, their 2nd conference title since 2021. Matilde Motta and Alyssa Jones led the Norsemen with 13 points a piece.
The boys game followed with Roland-Story taking on a PCM team that nearly upset the Norsemen in Monroe back in December. The Norsemen got out to a slight lead in the 1st quarter, up 14-9, then extended to 32-21 by halftime. The 3rd quarter, much like for the girls, would be the deciding factor for the boys, as Roland-Story outscored PCM 27-18 in the frame to lead 59-39 going into the 4th, as the Norsemen closed out a 71-53 win. Brett Schmitz put up a career-high 19 points in the win, while Boaz Clark had 11 points.
Roland-Story basketball returns to action on Friday, when they travel to Nevada to take on the Cubs in Heart of Iowa Conference action.
