The South Hamilton Hawks basketball teams returned to action on Tuesday night, as they hosted the Perry Bluejays in Heart of Iowa Conference action at South Hamilton High School in Jewell. The Hawk girls entered with a record of 9-4, while the Hawk boys entered at 11-1.
Tuesday’s game was originally slated to be hosted by Perry, but after the events of January 4th, the game was moved to Jewell due to damage sustained at Perry High School. South Hamilton’s girls would use defense to their advantage in the 1st half, holding the Jayettes to just 9 points, but the Hawks offense struggled itself, leading only 17-9 at halftime. However, the offense woke up in the 3rd quarter for South Hamilton, putting up 19 points in the 3rd quarter, which propelled the Hawks to a 45-26 victory. Ashlyn Erickson led all scorers with 19 points, while Tanna Thompson added 11 points for the Hawks.
The boys game followed with the Hawks looking to continue their pace with Nevada and Roland-Story in the Heart of Iowa Conference and did just that, leading 15-9 after the first quarter. The 2nd quarter would be a slugfest, with the Bluejays holding their own, but South Hamilton leading 22-15 at the halftime break. The Hawks gained more separation in the 3rd quarter, leading 39-30 going into the 4th, before pulling away for a 56-40 win. Reece Ricke had a career-night with 26 points, while Ryland Ubben added in 19 points, Brandon Mahler led Perry with 13.
South Hamilton basketball returns to action on Thursday night, when they travel to Eldora to take on long-time rivals South Hardin.
