The South Hamilton Hawks basketball teams returned to action on Friday night, as they made the drive west to Jefferson to take on the Greene County Rams in Heart of Iowa Conference action at Greene County High School. The Hawks girls entered at 8-4, while the Hawk boys entered at 10-1 and ranked #9 in Class 2A.
South Hamilton’s girls came out of the gates fast as they led 22-6 after 1, before that lead was built to 36-10 at halftime. The Hawks used their smothering defense and full-court pressure to hold Greene County to just 6 second-half points, en route to a 61-16 win. Kaylen Trask was the KQWC Player of the Game with 12 points, while Ashlyn Erickson and Tanna Thompson also finished with 12 points for the Hawks.
The boys game followed as South Hamilton looked to shake the rust off a nearly two-week hiatus from game action and the rust showed early, as the 9th-rated Hawks trailed 19-17 after one, and went into halftime tied at 32-32. The Hawks offense came to life in the 3rd quarter with 22 points in the frame, but Greene County went blow-for-blow with the Hawks, as South Hamilton led 54-52 going into the 4th. However, the Hawks got stops down the stretch and grinded out a 73-60 road win. The KQWC Player of the Game was Ryland Ubben, who had a monster night of 29 points and 19 rebounds, while Reece Ricke had 12 points to his name.
