Webster City wrestling splits tri-dual with St. Edmond and Algona

The Webster City Lynx wrestling team made the short trip west on old Highway 20 on Thursday night, to compete in a North Central Conference tri-dual at St. Edmond High School in Fort Dodge. The Lynx were joined by the host Gaels as well as the Algona Bulldogs.

Webster City started the night with the host Gaels, and jumped out to a 30-0 lead before a wrestler ever stepped on the mat for St. Edmond. Sam Myer would get a win for the Gaels at 138, pinning Gavin Wynkoop, before the Lynx picked up 3 more forfeit wins to lead 48-6. Isaac Firsching would pick up a pin at 165 over Dominic McClain, before St. Edmond’s Zach Rossmanith pinned Carson Bertran at 190 lbs. Eli Estlund finished action off with a pin over Adam Walker at 215 lbs as the Lynx secured at 72-12 win.

The Lynx would follow up with a much stiffer challenge in the Algona Bulldogs, the current leaders in the NCC Dual Team Standings. Angel Ramirez picked up a forfeit win at 106, followed by Linden Phetxoumphone picking up a 2nd period pin of Algona’s Thomas Zabka to put the Lynx ahead 12-0. Algona’s Isaac Wilson pinned Ridge Berninghause at 120, which was then followed by a Carson Doolittle pin at 126 and an Adrian Phetxoumphone tech fall at 132 lbs to put Webster City up 23-6. Algona would then rip off 6 wins in a row, with pins coming from Barrett Morgan (138), Tate Slagle (144), Colby Jennings (165) and Dane Kitzinger (175), as well as major decisions from Ashton Moreno (150) and Taevyn Zinnel (157), to take a 38-23 lead. Carson Bertran would bounce back with a 9-4 decision at 190 to keep the Lynx alive, but a Gavin Goche pin of Eli Estlund at 215 clinched the dual for the Bulldogs. Landon Griffin would end the dual with a pin of Cohen Reffer at 285 to make the final 44-32.

Webster City wrestling returns to action on Saturday, when they compete in the Allie Morrison Dual Tournament at the Marshalltown Roundhouse in Marshalltown.
