The Roland-Story Norsemen basketball team opened their 2024 schedule on Tuesday night, as they welcomed in the Cadets of Iowa Falls-Alden in for a non-conference matchup at Roland-Story High School in Story City. The Norsemen girls entered at 9-0, while the Norsemen boys entered at 8-0.
It was a battle early in the girls game, with Iowa Falls-Alden keeping pace with the Norsemen, but Roland-Story held a 20-12 lead after the first quarter. The 2nd quarter saw the Norsemen ratchet up the intensity on both ends, outscoring the Cadets 25-8 to take a 45-20 halftime lead. Roland-Story continued to lean on that intensity in the 2nd half en route to a dominant 79-39 win. Matilde Motta led the way for the Norsemen with 17 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists in the win, while Kam Lande finished with 11 points.
The boys game followed, which proved to be a slugfest in its own right, with the Norsemen up 12-4 after the first quarter. Iowa Falls-Alden offense picked up pace in the 2nd quarter, and went into the halftime break trailing 23-19. Roland-Story continued to hold the slight lead going into the 4th quarter, before the Norsemen offense broke open for 26 points in the frame, en route to a 61-43 win over the Cadets. Stats were not available as of Wednesday morning.
Roland-Story basketball returns to action on Friday, when they host South Hamilton in an eagerly-anticipated doubleheader in Story City at 6 PM.
