The South Hamilton Hawks basketball teams returned to action on Tuesday night, as they hosted the West Marshall Trojans in Heart of Iowa Conference action at South Hamilton High School in Jewell. The Hawk girls entered at 6-1, while the Hawk boys entered at 6-0.
The girls game would be a defensive slugfest throughout, with West Marshall leading just 10-7 after the first quarter, but South Hamilton seized control in the 2nd quarter, going into halftime with a 19-17 lead. However, shots began falling more consistently in the 2nd half for the Trojans, who led 34-29 after the 3rd quarter, and timely 4th quarter threes allowed West Marshall to come away with a 51-41 win. Makena Galetich was the game-high scorer with 16 points, while Ashlyn Erickson had 10 points, Bella Borgos led West Marshall with 13.
South Hamilton’s boys followed with a game that was started off quick, as the Hawks led 17-12 after the first quarter, a lead that grew to 35-27 at halftime. However, defenses would reign in the 2nd half, as South Hamilton only outscored West Marshall 8-7 in the 3rd quarter for a 42-35 lead. South Hamilton would keep the Trojans at arms length, and end-of-game free throws sealed a 54-47 win for the Hawks. Ryland Ubben led all scorers with 20 points, while Reece Ricke had 16 for the Hawks.
South Hamilton basketball returns to action on Friday, when they travel to Nevada to take on the Cubs in a critical Heart of Iowa Conference matchup at 6 PM.
