The South Hamilton Hawks basketball teams returned to action on Friday night, as they hosted the Perry Bluejays in Heart of Iowa Conference action at South Hamilton High School in Jewell. The Hawk girls entered at 5-1, while the Hawk boys entered at 5-0.
South Hamilton’s girls got off to yet another dominant start, leading Perry 15-6 after the first quarter. The Perry offense would find some life in the 2nd quarter, cutting the halftime margin to 29-19. South Hamilton then ratcheted up the intensity on both ends of the floor in the 3rd quarter, outscoring the Hawks 26-6 en route to a 65-32 victory. Makena Galetich finished with a game-high 19 points along with 6 assists, while Ashlyn Erickson finished with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, Karagyn Whelchel led Perry with 11 points.
The boys game followed with a Perry team that was ready to compete, despite their 1-3 start. The first quarter ended up knotted at 17-17, as Perry’s offense was able to knock down a couple more shots in the 2nd quarter to lead 34-28 at halftime. The Bluejays kept the Hawks at bay in the 3rd quarter, holding a 44-39 lead. However, South Hamilton roared to life in the 4th quarter, behind the clutch shooting of Ty Koehnk and the key baskets by Noah Gunderson to close out a 63-55 win. Ty Koehnk led South Hamilton with 19 points, while Ryland Ubban finished with a double-double of 16 points, 14 rebounds as well as 4 assists. Perry’s Geren Kenney finished with a game-high 30 points.
South Hamilton returns to action on Tuesday night, when they host West Marshall in Heart of Iowa Conference action in Jewell.
