The Eagle Grove Eagles basketball teams returned to action on Friday night, as they hosted the Golden Bears of Algona Bishop Garrigan at Eagle Grove Elementary School. Eagle Grove’s girls came in with a record of 0-3, while Eagle Grove’s boys entered at 2-1.
Eagle Grove’s girls faced a daunting task of trying to slow down the 10th-ranked team in Class 1A, and the Bears dominance showed in the 1st quarter, leading 25-0 after one. Eagle Grove’s offense picked up in the 2nd quarter, as Bishop Garrigan led 38-12 at halftime. The Golden Bears pitched another quarter shutout in the 3rd with a 17-0 margin to lead 55-12 before closing a 64-15 victory. Nadia Kaiser led the way with 5 points for Eagle Grove, while Abbie Capesius had a game-high 16 points for Garrigan.
The boys game followed as Eagle Grove’s boys looked to build off their 80-59 win over Belmond-Klemme on Tuesday and did just that, as the Eagles outscored the Golden Bears 22-9 in the first quarter. Bishop Garrigan’s offense would come to life in the 2nd quarter with 23 points, but Eagle Grove scored 19 of their own to hold a 41-32 halftime lead. The Eagles offense continued their torrent pace in the 2nd half, leading 67-50 after 3 before riding out a 79-64 win. Tyreon Franklin led all scorers with 26 points, along with7 rebounds and 5 assists, while Drake Canavan had 25 points with 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals.
Eagle Grove basketball returns to action on Tuesday night, when they make the northern trip to Winnebago County to take on Lake Mills at 6 PM.
