The Webster City Lynx basketball teams returned to action on Friday night, as the Lynx traveled to Butler County to take on the Falcons of Aplington-Parkersburg in non-conference action at Aplington-Parkersburg High School. The Lynx girls entered at 0-3, while the Lynx boys were in their season-opener.
Webster City’s girls had another tall task on Friday, taking on a Falcons team that was ranked 9th in Class 2A, but Mark Fisher’s squad held their own in the first half, trailing just 16-12 after the first quarter, and 28-22 at the halftime break. However, the Falcons defense stiffened in the 3rd quarter, outscoring the Lynx 17-7 in the frame before putting up 17 more in the 4th to take a 66-39 win.
The boys game followed as Brett Ratcliffe’s Lynx opened the season with the Falcons of A-P on Friday, but it would be a slow start, with the Lynx trailing 10-0 off the rip, and down 12-4 at the end of the 1st quarter. The Webster City offense would wake up from their, outscoring the Falcons 16-15 in the 2nd and 18-12 in the 3rd, cutting the A-P lead to just 39-38 going into the 4th quarter. However, A-P’s offense found a reawakening in the 4th quarter and held on for a 58-53 win. Briar Klaver had 22 points and 6 rebounds, while Jack Larson had 8 points and 10 rebounds, A-P’s Gavin Thomas had a game-high 26 points and scored his 1,000th career point in the game.
Webster City basketball returns to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Rockwell City to take on South Central Calhoun in a boys/girls doubleheader at 6 PM.
