The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows basketball teams returned to action on Friday night, as they made the short journey to Fort Dodge to take on the Gaels of St. Edmond in their North Central Conference opener at St. Edmond High School. The Cowgirls entered at 0-2, while the Cowboys were in their season-opener.
The Cowgirls opened the night against the St. Edmond Gaels and stumbled out of the gate, managing just 5 points in the first half and trailing 23-5 at halftime. The offense picked up a tad in the 3rd, but the Cowgirls trailed 37-17. However, CGD exploded in the 4th quarter for 26 points, but the Gaels 13 in the frame was just enough for St. Edmond to hold on for a 50-43 win.
CGD’s boys followed against an improved St. Edmond team and would be in a battle with Gaels for all 4 quarters. St. Edmond jumped out to a 20-11 after the first quarter, but the Cowboys would slowly but surely climb back into the game, trailing just 26-21 at halftime. A high-scoring 3rd quarter, saw the Cowboys cut the lead to 43-39, and CGD managed to bring the game to one possession late in the 4th quarter and had a chance to get off the final shot, but St. Edmond forced a turnover as time expired to hold on 52-50. Freshman Chaz Lane led CGD with 13 points, while Caden Hankins and JD Morrical finished with 7 points each.
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows returns to action on Friday when they host Iowa Falls-Alden at CGD High School in Clarion at 6:15 PM.
