The Webster City Lynx football team returned to action on Friday night, for the first round of the Class 3A Playoffs, as they hosted the Nevada Cubs at Lynx Field. Webster City entered with a record of 7-2 and 4-1 in the district, while Nevada also entered at 7-2 and 4-1 out of District 6.
Webster City wasted little time in taking control of this game, marching down the field and capitalizing on a Jaxon Cherry 7-yard touchdown run to put Webster City ahead 7-0. Following another defensive stop, the Webster City offense went to their bag of tricks, as wide receiver Briar Klaver took a reverse 23 yards for a touchdown to put Webster City up 14-0. The two defenses would then battle it out in the 2nd quarter as the Lynx went into the halftime break with a 14-0 lead.
The 2nd half would see much of the same, as Webster City put together, long, clock-draining drive resulting in points, as Jaxon Cherry punched in a pair of short touchdown runs in the 3rd quarter, to put Webster City up 27-0, before Nevada got on the board in the 4th quarter off a 3-yard touchdown run by Cason Stevenson to bring the final score to 27-7.
Jaxon Cherry produced another monster day, rushing for 200 yards and 3 touchdowns on 29 carries, while tallying a team-high 11 tackles and a tackle for loss. Edge rusher Jayden Weinzetl had a big night as well, amassing 7 tackles, 2 tackles for loss and 2 sacks on the day, while Cael Nixon and Keegan Hisler both added fumble recoveries, as Nevada was held to just 146 yards of total offense.
Webster City improved to 8-2 with the win, and will advance to the Class 3A Quarterfinals, where they will face #1 Creston at Creston High School on Friday night for a spot in the UNI Dome.
