The Webster City Lynx football team returned to action on Friday night, as they hosted longtime North Central Conference rivals Humboldt in Class 3A, District 2 action at Lynx Field at Webster City High School. Webster City entered with a record of 6-2 and 3-1 in the district, while Humboldt entered at 5-3 and a similar 3-1 district record.
Humboldt took the football to start the night, and marched down the field and punched in a 6-yard touchdown run by Coen Matson to put the Wildcats up 7-0. Webster City would put together a drive at the end of the 1st quarter and into the 2nd quarter, capped off by 13-yard touchdown run by Jaxon Cherry, to bring the score to 7-6 Humboldt after the missed PAT. Following a defensive stop, Webster City would march the field again and punch in a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Keegan Hisler to put Webster City ahead 12-7 at the halftime break.
The 2nd half showcased the Lynx continuing to suffocate the Wildcats on both sides of the ball, highlighted by the Webster City offense putting together a 99-yard drive, capped off by a Jaxon Cherry 2-yard touchdown run to put the Lynx ahead 19-7. Webster City once again halted Humboldt’s offense at the end of the 3rd quarter, and put together another long, clock-draining drive in the 4th quarter, as Jaxon Cherry punctuated the game with a 5-yard touchdown run to put Webster City ahead by the final score of 26-7.
Jaxon Cherry would run for 234 yards and 3 touchdowns on 31 carries, with a reception for 17 yards. Keegan Hisler would complete 1 pass for 17 yards, while rushing for 102 yards and a touchdown and catching a pass for 29 yards.
Webster City clinched the #2 seed out of Class 3A, District 2 and will host the Nevada Cubs on Friday night at Lynx Field for the first round of the Class 3A Playoffs.
